The Secret to True Change

Some days you’ll be in a really good mood. Sometimes you’ll be in a really awful mood and feel really bad about yourself. Follow the plan anyways. Some says you will not feel hungry at all. Some days you’ll be absolutely starving. Some days you’ll want to skip meals. Some days you’ll not even feel like eating at all. Follow the plan anyways. Some days you’ll feel fat. Some days you’ll feel skinny. Some days you’ll feel on the top of the world. Other days you’ll feel like you’re in the dirt. There will be days when you just want to lay in bed and cry and eat chocolate sauce straight from the jar and forget about life. There will be days where you just want to hide under a rock. There will be days when you’d want nothing more than to scream at the top of your lungs how amazing life is. How much you’ve progressed. How much you love life. How beautiful you feel. How successful you feel. How amazing you feel. When knowing how far you’ve come and how much you’ve grown as a person almost makes you cry from joy. Follow the plan anyways.

You will have breakups. You will have losses. You will have hurts. You will have pains. You will get the worst cold of the century and be sneezing and horking up big gobs of yellow-tinted snot and will have a splitting migraine. You will have a bad day at work. Your boss will tell you off. A coworker will hurt your feelings. Or get on your last nerve. You will get a case of food poisoning. You will trip over that darn ottoman again and bruise your knee. You will not sleep. You will oversleep past your alarm. You will go on trips to other cities. You will have nothing but airplane food for 24 hours. You will have birthday parties. You will have outings. You will have relatives stay for dinner. You will have weddings. You will have family arguments. You will have fights with your boyfriend, your best friend, or (god forbid) your grudge-holding mom. You will have donut-filled work meetings. You will get called into work last minute or be asked to stay late (again). You will have that big test. You will have that big date. You may even get fired. You will get a new car. Or pop the tire on your old one and be left stranded in the parking lot for 3 hours. You may get a new puppy or niece or even a shiny new barbecue or grill or crock pot that is calling you to cook some greasy fried chicken. Follow the plan anyways.

You may doubt yourself. You may hate yourself. You may second guess the outcomes. You may feel like the fear, worries, overwhelm, have gotten to be too much. You may feel like you can’t continue. That you’re “not made for this”. That your goal will never come to fruition. That you’ve been working hard for so long and nothing has changed. That you don’t deserve to be happy. That you don’t deserve the body of your dreams. That you’re not the kind of person who could ever possibly get to that point. To be that lean. To be that beautiful. To be that successful. That you’re not mature enough. Confident enough. Stable enough. Worthy enough. Loved enough. Secure enough. That you don’t and haven’t and won’t ever have your “shit together” like the girls on the magazine covers. Like the Instagram queens. Like the popular, successful, tan, beautiful, attractive, much-loved guys with the perfect girlfriends and the perfect business and the perfect kinesiology degree who act like they have lived this live twice over and know exactly what the right way for everyone to do things is, despite what anyone else says, and that anyone who doesn’t apply the correct protocol to diet and fitness is wrong. Apparently they know all the answers to the questions of life and success. And by the looks of it they probably know all the answers to the questions on steroid use too. But that’s a different post.

I am here to tell you despite the thoughts, the feelings, the roadblocks, and the “life” that happens in between one goal to the next:

You ARE capable.
You ARE worthy.
You deserve success.
You deserve love.
You can be, do, and have everything you could ever dream of in this world, if you choose to dream it, and more importantly, if you choose to believe it.

My lesson for you here today is that despite the trials; despite the tribulations. Despite the ups and the downs. Despite the roadblocks, the set backs, the speed bumps, the potholes, the detours, the shitty ass road conditions, the closures, the high speed car accidents, or god forbid the crashes and burns, the future is yours. The journey may be long but it’s yours for the taking. Own it, cherish it. Ride the highs. Dig the lows. Life is not meant to be coasted through but to be taken for a ride. Grab the reigns and dig your heels in and tell that damn bucking bronco where to go.

Life is meant to be lived. And you deserve life beyond anything you’ve ever experienced before.

It won’t be easy but it will be worth it. And when the going gets tough or you don’t feel like yourself or you feel scared - then its working. In this moment you ARE change. And there’s only one way to keep that change going despite everything. And the answer, my friends, is this:

Follow the plan anyways.
