How Mindful Eating Will Change Your Life

Slow down. Savour. Remind yourself that you can eat again, at any time. You can go back and finish the food later. It will always be there.

As a chronic dieter or fitness competitor it can be hard to slow down and to listen to our bodies. To listen to what we need. To accurately interpret our hunger cues. To know when we need to eat and when we need to find comfort, excitement, rest, or just a moment to be still. That’s okay. Be patient with yourself and be patient with the process.

Your body carries infinite knowledge about what is best for you. Listen to your body, your mind, and your soul to determine your course of action. Learn to appreciate the pause. Learn to appreciate that space between your thought and your action. Your feeling and the action.

Sit down, set your food on the table. Appreciate it all for what it is. If you don’t want to eat it, don’t. Get something else. Or wait until there is something better to eat. It’s up to you. There will always be more food. There will always be more opportunities to eat. And each time you eat, should be enjoyable and pleasurable, or at least satisfying your basic hunger and nutrient cues. Eat from a place of self love, self care, and respect for yourself as a whole person. For the biologically, genetically, spiritually, unique person you are. No one else’s diet will ever be right for you. You have unique needs. Inside and out. Unique preferences and tastes and styles and we are all satisfied in different ways. Find the diet that best satisfies you in all ways, body mind and soul. And once you find this diet, savour it. Take your time. You deserve to heal yourself inside and out and eating is one of the most intimate relationships you’ll ever have with the outside world.

And that sounds crazy, but it’s true. The food we eat interacts with us on a cellular level. It touches our organs and our blood and our tissues and our cells. It makes us who we are today. Our bodies are literally formed by the nourishment we put in our bodies. Choose to feed yourself in a way that supports your growth and your vitality. Eat in a way that honours and respects yourself. It is one of the highest forms of self love, to nourish our bodies with nutrients that will supply our bodies with the material to build our beautiful physical selves. Food is more than just taste. Food is central to how we see ourselves. It’s central to our history. To our society. To connect with others. To reduce food to simply taste or physical pleasure is just not enough.

Choose mindfully what you need. Inside and out. From a place of self respect and according to your values.

Hit your calories. Lose weight, yes. But never forget to give your body credit in the process.
