Why You Should Weigh Yourself Once a Month (Or Less)

On your weight loss journey there will be ups and downs. And one of the hardest part of any weight loss journey is mentally dealing with the fact that changes take time. That there will be ebbs and flows. Good days and bad days. That there will be times you feel discouraged, like you're going backwards, or even like you're not making any progress at all. Remember this is all in your head. You are doing amazing. You are working so hard. I promise you, change is just around the corner. And the next corner. And the next. But we can't see what's around that corner until we get to that point of change.

Be excited for the unexpected. Be excited for those moments where you notice - "oh hey, my pants feel a bit looser today". Or - "wow I didn't notice that muscle before".

These moments will happen.

Changes come when you least expect it.

Embrace the excitement of never knowing when you'll notice, but in knowing that you will!

Be moved for what's to come. The mystery to unfold.

Everyone loses weight differently. What body parts will YOU notice the changes in first? What feelings or body sensations will become new to you? This is an adventure, a journey. It is our small successes along the way that keep us pushing forward, wondering what new discoveries will unfold next. Your body is a temple. A sculpture. Watch the masterpiece unfold. And be proud of yourself every step of the process. Because every single thing you do FOR YOURSELF is a gift to the stunning, amazing, worthy body that you've been given. The one physical body you've been gifted on this earth. It is your duty to honour yourself for all you are and all you can be.

By stepping away from the scale we can better gauge our progress over the long term. And get back into the healthy mindset of knowing that fat loss occurs over months and years - over lifetimes - rather than days. To know that you're in it for the long haul. To know that your habits are more important than the outcomes and those habits are what will lead to lasting change. To know that your weight loss is directly tied to the effort and commitment and consistency you put in over time. To stop wishful and magical thinking and praying for a drop that may or may not occur from day-to-day. To stop tieing your mood to a number. To have faith that your plan will work. To trust the process. If we over-rely on the scale it takes us away from the BIGGER picture. It takes us away from focussing on our effort, mindset, behavioural changes, consistency, and non-scale victories. The true factors that cause facilitate change.

Once a month gives you enough time to see reasonable changes. It allows you to cultivate patience. Gives you the opportunity to build trust, faith, self-motivation. It gives you time to just "be".

Take a step back - today - and look at the bigger picture. The realistic, long-term trajectory of your weight loss.

Rest in knowing the plan will work. Just give it time. Give it space. And allow yourself to breathe. You will achieve the body of your dreams. You will achieve your goals. Month by month. Year by year. The future is yours and it rests in your now. It rests in you relaxing your mind and allowing yourself the chance to be successful. Allowing the changes to develop. Allowing yourself to love and accept your body for what it can do and how it feels outside of a number on the scale - for once. You deserve it.
